When shipping packages or goods from the United States into Norway, the biggest unknown is typically the cost associated with the duties and the taxes. Every country has different regulations and policies to follow, Norway is no different. But as a general rule, most goods imported into Norway are required to pay for:

  • 1) Duties (Ad Valorem Duty)
  • 2) VAT (Value Added Taxes)


  • Duties
    Duties are based on the value of the shipment plus the cost of the insurance (if any). The Duty rates applied to goods imported into Norway typically range between 0% and 25%. But most products, such as, books, Cosmetics, Watches, shoes, Mobile phones, PC, Laptops and other electronic devices, are Duty free.

    In addition, it is important to know that all goods with a CIF value below NOK 350.00 ($42.35) are exempt from duties. This tax exemption applies to all goods except alcohol and tobacco.



    VAT (Value Added Taxes)
    The Norwegian standard rate of VAT is 25%. Although, there is a reduced rate of 15% for certain goods like food products, on the sum of the CIF value, duty and other taxes if applicable. Goods exempt from the VAT include health-care and education, such as books.

    In addition, it is important to know that all goods with a CIF value below NOK 350.00 ($42.35) are exempt from VAT (Value Added Taxes). This tax exemption applies to all goods except alcohol and tobacco.
